Cinema That Nobody Watches?
On September 19 at 4:00 PM, we invite you to Korsaks’ Museum of Contemporary Ukrainian Art for the lecture “Cinema That Nobody Watches? Why Ukrainian Films Can Be More Important Than Their Box Office Results.”
What is the difference between a film’s commercial success and its cultural value? Why can some Ukrainian films, despite never becoming box-office hits, have a much greater impact on society than the numbers suggest?
We will discuss Ukrainian cinema with Zoia Alforova, one of Ukraine’s leading film scholars, Doctor of Art Studies, Professor, film critic, and lecturer. She heads the Kharkiv branch of the National Union of Cinematographers of Ukraine and the Kharkiv branch of the Association of Film Education and Media Pedagogy Professionals of Ukraine.
This lecture will explore contemporary cinema as a complex cultural, economic, and social phenomenon whose success cannot be measured by box office results alone. We will discuss a broader understanding of the success of audiovisual works, one that combines economic performance, audience reach, artistic quality, professional recognition, social impact, cultural significance, and their role in representing Ukraine internationally.
